Character Background and Description
Maria is the eldest of six children. Her father, Rory Smith, was a farmer. Her mother Elinda, a Rune-Maker. She grew up with her parents and brothers on a farm along Highway 1, about ten minutes south of Half Moon Bay. As the eldest, and only girl, she enforced discipline and cleanliness among her unruly siblings with a far firmer hand than either of her parents ever had. Elinda taught Maria a few basics on runes and engraving them, but Maria lost interest as a child too quickly to be taught- distracted by one of her brothers getting into mischief, generally- and by the time her brothers had calmed down a bit she had already found her passion, so while she is aware of the supernatural side of Half Moon Bay she tries to avoid getting involved.
Maria met her husband Ralph while studying teaching in a local university, and two years after graduation they were married. Maria started off teaching in an elementary school, but after around five years was moved to the local middle school, where she's been happy ever since. In some way or another (Maria suspects her mother), local Rune-Makers with school-age children found out she's aware of the supernatural, and request their children be put into her classes when possible. This is primarily so the parents can give their children slightly less discrete accessories and school supplies. Maria pretends she doesn't notice, the parents pretend she doesn't notice, the children have no clue, and in the end everybody's much happier.
Neither she nor Ralph have any interest in having children- she runs herd over classrooms of unruly tweens and teens and has no desire to deal with one at home as well. They own two cats (Jess and Tess) and a dog (Max).
